The winners of the 2011 Défi Meilleurs Employeurs (best employer challenge) were unveiled during an award ceremony presented by Emploi-Québec and organized by weekly newspaper Les Affaires, the Ordre des conseillers en ressources humaines agréés and Towers Watson. Roche Ltd, Consulting Group and Ministère des Transports du Québec receive Award at the Transportation Association of Canada Gala for the “Program for the reconstruction of Highway 175 in the Laurentian Wildlife Reserve. One of the project’s challenges was to mitigate the road work’s impact on this species, in an area characterized by heavy precipitation, uneven terrain and erosion-sensitive soil,” says Jacqueline Roy, senior vice-president of Roche’s Environment division.
TDA Inc. Consulting Group, a member of the Roche Group, won in the “institutional building over 600 m2” category (in a tie with Roche construction) for the Centre communautaire de Betsiamites. The building was also lauded as a panel favourite. At the heart of the Betsiamites community, this project is consistent with Innu culture and demonstrates the importance of tasteful wood use.
Roche Construction won in the “institutional building over 600 m2” category for the Complexe de soccer du Parc Chauveau in Québec City (in a tie with the Centre communautaire de Betsiamites). A covered stadium that marks the Québec City area’s first sports complex and the province’s second, this project stood out for its unique design incorporating laminate arches (1.86 metres high) that support an over 80 metre roof span. Opting for this type of wood considerably reduced C02 emissions.
Pasquin St-Jean, a member of Roche Ltd, Consulting Group, won a 2011 Armatura award—celebrating excellence in reinforced concrete (steel)—for its Blũ Rivage development project, in the residential category.
The Blũ Rivage residential development consists of 220 condominium-style apartments on 25 floors. Totalling over 370 000 sq. ft. of surface area and requiring nearly 1 500 metric tons of reinforcing steel, the project received recognition for the implementation of several innovative ideas.
Given the soil conditions, the entire northern section had to be built on pilings. In order to minimize their number, the maximal load-bearing capacity of the pilings was increased to 1 500 kN (350 Kips). Several studies were conducted to determine the best reinforced concrete lateral resistance system for the project while respecting its architectural requirements.
Félix Bédard, from Pasquin St-Jean, a member of the Roche Group, was awarded in the Emerging Architect/Engineers category for the new entranceway to Stewart Museum on Ile Sainte-Hélène at the Steel Design Award Gala held by the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) in Montreal on May 3.
As main project designer, Félix Bédard, Jr. Eng., worked on the preliminary phase of the project through to the delivery of the plans and specifications. Félix exhibited all the talent of the emerging generation, demonstrating his knack for dynamic modelling. “His decision-making skills and creativity helped him meet the architects’ expectations and produce a unique, innovative design from both a structural and architectural standpoint,” said Claude Pasquin of Pasquin St-Jean.
Pasquin St-Jean, a member of the Roche Group, was awarded at the Steel Design Award Gala held by the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) in Montreal on May 3. The award recipient is the Malcolm-Knox aquatic centre in Pointe-Claire in the Jury’s Favourite category.
The project to modernize the Malcolm-Knox aquatic centre built in 1965 increased the surface area of the centre by 4,300 m2. The new gabled roof harmonizes the extension with the existing building. “The V-roof and sloping peak make for a unique building design. The project clearly demonstrates an original and refined way of integrating steel into the roof as well as the windows,” notes Michel St-Jean of Pasquin St-Jean.
